No, New Jersey has not always been called New Jersey. Originally, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes and was known by various names. When the Dutch and English colonized the region in the 17th century, it was referred to as New Netherland. After the English took control, it was divided into East Jersey and West Jersey. In 1664, the region was officially named New Jersey in honor of Sir George Carteret, who was the governor of the Isle of Jersey in the English Channel. **
